Artist Alley: Griffin Ong Opening Reception
Artist Alley: Griffin Ong, Remember the Source
"Remember the Source" documents the photographer's return to his grandparents’ ancestral villages in China's Pearl River Delta — a journey to rediscover family history, reconnect with long‑lost relatives, and better understand where Chinese Americans come from. The exhibit highlights images of family homes, village life, and a historic visit with the descendants of Wong Kim Ark, the man behind the birthright citizenship case in the U.S. These photos aim to inspire others to explore their own roots and share the stories that shape who they are.
Griffin Ong is a Brooklyn-based street photographer born and raised in San Francisco who is interested in capturing the interaction between people and the built environment in the spaces we inhabit. He is also passionate about food, history, and the evolution of cultures across time and space, especially as it pertains to Asian diasporic communities.
Exhibition on view until: 09.24.2026

Test Thursday: Umami Granola
UMAMI GRANOLA will pop up at The Hub for its Test Thursday event on August 6!
As the first Cantonese granola, made small-batch in Brooklyn, the business will be sharing two blends available for sampling and purchase at the pop-up.
Two blends draw from Cantonese culinary tradition: Dau-Si-Do, their savory umami granola carrying dim sum tradition, and Dragon-Eyed Wolf, their floral sweet granola carrying tong sui tradition.
At the pop-up, both blends will be available for sampling served with cold brew tea and yogurt pairings. Customers can purchase the Discover 2.5oz pouch at $5 or the full 8oz pouch at $16 per blend.
The pop-up event is open to all during the following times:
10am to 12pm at 115 Bowery (The Hub)
4pm to 8pm at 115 Bowery (The Hub)
About the Founder:
Cindy (芝) is a first-generation Cantonese American founder and the creator of UMAMI GRANOLA, the first Cantonese granola.
Growing up in a Cantonese household, her maternal grandmother in Chicago and her paternal grandmother in Guangzhou each carried distinct culinary traditions that became the foundation for the brand's first two blends. During her college years, she gained her first hands-on food business experience running marketing, operations, and vendor events for her uncle's restaurant from the ground up.
With 20 years in marketing and advertising across Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies, she brought that professional experience to building UMAMI GRANOLA.

Artist Alley Opening: "From Wenzhou” Caroline Xia and Leslie Xia
Artist Alley Opening: "From Wenzhou” Caroline Xia and Leslie Xia
Welcome to Chinatown’s Artist Alley is showcasing From Wenzhou by Caroline Xia and Leslie Xia
From Wenzhou is a photographic and video exploration of lineage, grief, and belonging. Created following the passing of Caroline Xia and Leslie Xia’s maternal grandmother in Wenzhou, China, the work documents a return to their family's hometown after nearly twenty years away.
Born and raised in Queens, New York, the Xia sisters grew up in Flushing, one of New York City’s largest Chinese immigrant communities. The journey to Wenzhou became an opportunity to reconnect with their roots and reflect on who they are and where they came from. Through intimate visual documentation, the Xia sisters explore what it means to mourn across borders and generations, tracing a journey not only across the globe but inward, into questions of identity, regret, and intergenerational resilience.
The seven photographs presented here are selected from From Wenzhou, a multimedia project and photo book photographed by Caroline Xia and designed by Leslie Xia. The images move between personal family history and the cultural specificity within the Wenzhounese community. Included are photographs from their grandmother's abandoned apartment, visits to her grave, portraits of family members, and scenes from their mother and grandmother's hometown, alongside observations of daily life in Wenzhou.
Accompanying the photographs is a video installation of VHS footage recorded by Sing Liu Ha, Caroline and Leslie's paternal grandfather, and other family members. Filmed throughout the 1980s and 1990s in both Wenzhou and Queens, the footage documents everyday family life across continents, capturing family dinners, conversations, life at home, and childhood moments.
While rooted in a specific family history, From Wenzhou is a love letter to grandmothers, immigrant daughters, and the fragments of heritage that continue to shape us even when we are far away.
