Our Approach
Driving Manhattan’s Chinatown towards a future where tradition meets innovation, our mission is to bolster local businesses and entrepreneurs and forge connections within and across the community.
Small businesses are the economic heartbeat of Chinatown, representing 98% of businesses (Chinatown BID). They sustain families, preserve cultural heritage, and foster a resilient local economy. Investing in these businesses doesn’t just ensure their survival—it fuels generational wealth, strengthens social safety nets, and enhances the built environment by keeping storefronts active and community-driven. By supporting Chinatown’s entrepreneurs, we are not only preserving a legacy but also shaping a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem for future generations.
Our vision is to ensure Chinatown thrives as a beacon of cultural and economic resilience. Together, we will keep Chinatown open for generations to come.
A thriving Chinatown requires more than short-term solutions—it demands lasting investments that preserve its cultural identity and strengthen its economic foundation. Our commitment is to create sustainable opportunities that empower businesses today while securing the future of Chinatown through enduring economic vitality and cultural preservation.
Our Values
We are Partners, not Saviors.
Listening with empathy as a first step of action.
We build alongside our community, moving at the speed of trust because
the best ideas come from within;
informed actions start from understanding our communities’ experiences;
strength and resiliency are ingrained in Chinatown.
Together with our constituents, trusted partners and community leaders, we ensure evolution reflects the real needs and aspirations of Chinatown.
We Believe in the Human Spirit.
Championing the determination, creativity, and passion behind every pursuit
We center the individual as a foundational first step because:
behind every idea is a personal story of resilience and drive;
entrepreneurship has the power to transform lives and communities;
not everyone has equal access and opportunity to bring their ideas to fruition.
Good ideas deserve a chance. By investing in the success of each individual, Chinatown can flourish– anchored by the spirit of its people and our unwavering belief in what they can achieve.
We embrace Chinatown’s rich legacy.
Honoring culture and community while looking forward.
We nurture the Chinatown that generations have built, a
space for our multifaceted community;
platform for diverse, loud and proud voices;
hub for cultural identity.
We ensure Chinatown continues to exist for The Asian Diaspora –a gateway for opportunity, vehicle to embrace identity, and haven for all who call it home.
We build for generations.
Creating lasting impact through sustainable solutions.
We uphold legacy while fostering future growth, creating space for
cross generational learning;
tailored support that may be intentionally slow;
tackling systemic issues.
Our community-driven strategies uplift businesses to not only survive, but thrive– passing on cultural and economic wealth to create a foundation for longevity.
Strategic Goals
Our initiatives tackle the structural challenges that have long hindered Chinatown’s small businesses, from barriers to capital access to the digital divide. Through strategic programming and community-driven solutions, we create pathways for economic resilience, cultural preservation, and sustainable growth.
BUILD Chinatown into a self-sustaining ecosystem, adaptive to external forces.
-
Chinatown’s economy has long been shaped by systemic barriers—gentrification, rising rents, and limited access to financial resources. Small businesses, the backbone of the neighborhood, are struggling with outdated infrastructure, supply chain disruptions, and a lack of long-term sustainability planning. Without intervention, Chinatown risks becoming an enclave of the past rather than a self-sustaining, future-ready economic hub.
-
We are ensuring Chinatown is resilient to external forces by fostering an ecosystem where small businesses can thrive. Through strengthened local supply chains, expanding access to capital and revenue opportunities, and core skills training, and strategic policy advocacy and resilience-driven community planning, we can ensure Chinatown businesses can adapt to external forces while maintaining cultural and economic integrity.
-

Data: Improve Welcome to Chinatown’s tech stack to build a foundational small business database and improve speed at which we collect and report out economic data.

PRESERVE Chinatown as a vibrant cultural symbol and ethnic enclave, prioritizing residents.
-
As development pressures mount, Chinatown risks losing its identity as an ethnic enclave. Businesses and residents who have shaped the neighborhood for generations are being displaced, threatening the very fabric of the community.
-
We prioritize Chinatown’s residents and small businesses by activating cultural programming, community driven placemaking, and strengthening policies that protects the neighborhood’s cultural and economic integrity. By investing in legacy businesses, activating community spaces, and advocating for sustainable urban planning, we ensure Chinatown remains a vibrant cultural symbol.

EMPOWER the community through economic and market influence.
-
Chinatown’s small businesses and community assets have long struggled with systemic barriers to capital, limiting their ability to scale, modernize, or transition ownership. With the Great Wealth Transfer underway—an estimated $84 trillion passing from older to younger generations—there is an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine how wealth is invested in historically underfunded communities. Without intentional efforts to bridge capital gaps, shift narratives, and engage the next generation of investors and philanthropists, Chinatown risks losing its economic and cultural assets to external interests rather than securing them for future generations.
-
We are leveraging both capital pathways and storytelling to ensure that Chinatown’s businesses, properties, and cultural institutions remain community-owned and valued. Through capital matchmaking, succession planning, and investment-readiness training, we equip entrepreneurs with the tools to navigate wealth transitions and secure long-term ownership. At the same time, we are shifting the narrative—engaging Millennials and Gen Z, who are now coming into wealth, to recognize the significance of communities like Chinatown. By telling stories of resilience, intergenerational entrepreneurship, and cultural preservation, we inspire a new generation of investors, philanthropists, and conscious consumers to give back, reinvest, and sustain Chinatown’s future.
-
Accessing Capital: Create direct pathways to funding through capital matchmaking, community pooled capital, investment-readiness training, and advocacy for equitable procurement opportunities.

Awareness: Leverage data to drive accurate representation of on the ground issues in public and private sectors
UPLIFT fellow enclaves by sharing our thought leadership and open-sourcing our work.
-
Chinatowns and other ethnic enclaves across the country face similar challenges—rising rents, shifting demographics, and systemic barriers to business growth—yet there are few shared resources or scalable solutions to help them navigate these issues. Without a coordinated approach to knowledge-sharing and economic resilience, many of these communities risk losing their cultural and economic identity.
-
We strengthen not just Manhattan’s Chinatown, but Chinatowns across North America and ethnic enclaves across NYC by sharing insights, developing scalable economic models, and fostering cross-community collaboration. Through thought leadership, convenings, and open-sourcing our work, we equip other communities with the tools to build long-term sustainability while eliminating duplicative efforts.
