Business Supporting Business: KK Discount + HK Wonton Garden
The 3rd and final installment of our 3-part mini stories series, “Business Supporting Business,” where we speak with local Chinatown business owners about their favorite Chinatown spots. Through our work, we learned of so many incredible stories from small business owners in the neighborhood where a common theme across the board illustrated the community’s shared love, support and camaraderie for each other. Many of Chinatown’s small business owners are also patrons of the neighborhood, whether it be a place where they grab a bite to eat mid-shift or for family dinner on special occasions.

KK Discount has been in Chinatown for over 30 years. Today, it’s mainly the mom, dad and son who are constantly working in the shop. Their daughter and her child also come frequently to hang out. The granddaughter has become the unofficial mascot of the store. There’s always been a community vibe here. Read more about KK Discount’s story in Welcome to Chinatown’s August post.
HK Wonton Garden is just across the street and they’ve known each other for years, each store visiting the other and developing a neighborly camaraderie. Here, the KK Discount family tells us about their connection with HK Wonton Garden.
What is the significance of HK Wonton Garden to you and your family?
HK Wonton Garden is significant to us as a fellow neighboring business. We've looked out for each other ever since they've opened by supplying each other with essentials. We provide them with restaurant supplies, while they would cook us delicious food that gives us the energy to continue working long hours.
What do you love most about HK Wonton Garden?
The food keeps us going back day after day! Additionally, the staff at HK Wonton Garden are really friendly and nice. Sometimes they would even bring the lunch that we ordered right to our store when it is ready. Not only is it authentic Canto style food that is prepared relatively quickly, it is also one of the best cheap eat joints in the neighborhood. We are so lucky to have them conveniently across the street from our store!
What should people order when they eat at the restaurant?
This is so tough because they offer such a wide selection of delicious eats. The wontons are hands down a no brainer. Pair it with their different noodle styles and you will have a winning entree. We also love chicken and broccoli over rice. Although it is such a simple dish, the way they prepare it is different from how other Chinese restaurants serve it. The tender chicken is cut into small strips, and the broccoli is cooked to perfection - soft yet not over/undercooked like many other restaurants.
