NYC Political Party Registration Deadline

This year, NYC will pick a new mayor, city council reps, and more. These elections will be a major turning point for NYC, including Chinatown. First step - primary elections will be held on June 22, 2021, where voters from each party will select that party’s nominees to run in the November general election. This includes Chinatown’s city councilmember: Margaret Chin cannot run for another term.

New York has a closed primary system, meaning your voter registration must be with a political party to vote in that party’s primary election. For example, you must be registered as a Democrat to vote in the Democratic primary. If you are registered as “No Party” you cannot vote in primary elections. For existing registered voters, any political party changes must be received by (not postmarked to) your Board of Elections by February 14, 2021. Check your voter registration at nycvotersearch.com.
