Welcome to Chinatown Partners with Southern Smoke Foundation to Provide Chinese Language Access to Southern Smoke’s COVID-19 Crisis Relief Funds
When we started Welcome to Chinatown, one core reason we felt compelled to serve Manhattan Chinatown is because of its small businesses’ lack of access, specifically language access, to available private and public crisis relief funding. Last year, the Center for Responsible lending estimated 75% of Asian-owned restaurants stood close to no chance of receiving a PPP loan through a mainstream bank or credit union. Furthermore, significant sociocultural norms and linguistic barriers prevented first generation or non-English speaking businesses from applying for financial support.
To widen the funnel of access resources for relief funds and programs, Welcome to Chinatown has partnered with Southern Smoke Foundation — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation raising funds for support and assistance for those in the food and beverage community and their suppliers — to provide translation services for Chinese-speaking applicants who worked in an NYC Chinatown food or beverage establishment and need Chinese translation assistance in completing their application.
In the face of COVID, Southern Smoke set up a crisis relief fund for the thousands of food and beverage industry workers who were furloughed or laid off as restaurants, bars and its suppliers were forced to shut down or operate under tight restrictions and reduced hours throughout the pandemic. Most recently, Southern Smoke received recognition with a $1 million contribution by Chef David Chang after winning the celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
