Now Showing: WtC x Asian CineVision’s Movie Theatre Deluxe Snack Box

Film has been an intrinsic part of Chinese culture for decades, notably from movements like the Taiwanese New Wave and the Golden Age of Hong Kong action cinema. In mid-1900’s Manhattan’s Chinatown, Asian Americans had multiple Chinese language theaters that have since shuttered their doors: Music Palace (early 1970s-2000, Sun Sing Theatre (1950-1993), Pagoda Theatre (1964-1992), and Rosemary Theatre (1992-1996). Memories of watching Hong Kong melodramas or the Chinese opera for $3 have made Chinatown residents sentimental for these theaters.

This nostalgia and yearning for institutions that celebrated foreign films and cultural awareness is what inspired Welcome to Chinatown’s Movie Theatre Deluxe Snack Box. American theater classics like popcorn and box candy have been reimagined as a blend of Asian snacks that our parents used to have at the movies. In keeping with our mission of supporting Chinatown’s small businesses, we sourced everything from local stores.

All profits from this box will go towards Welcome to Chinatown’s Longevity Fund, a relief fund for Manhattan Chinatown’s local businesses that are significant to the community, like these closed theaters.
