‘Greens for Goods’ Raises $14,305 in Donations and Serves Over 7,705 lbs of Produce to Manhattan Chinatown’s Community
Greens for Good was built on the purpose of supporting the senior community in Manhattan Chinatown during NYC’s PAUSE. Even before the state-mandated shelter in place policy took effect, the elderly residents at Hong Ning Housing (managed by the Chinese-American Planning Council or “CPC”) have been reluctant to leave their homes due to age, limited mobility, the pandemic, and the rise of xenophobic attacks. CPC’s partnership with Welcome to Chinatown allowed their senior residents to remain safe and healthy in their own homes without worry for food supply.
Greens for Good successfully raised a whopping $14,305 in donations, which was double the initial fundraising goal, in a matter of two weeks! The money was used to purchase over 7,705 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables from Asian-Veggies.com to date. A portion of this was used to fill 420 produce bags that was donated to the senior community at Hong Ning Housing for the Elderly. With the excess funds, Welcome to Chinatown decided to continue its partnership with Asian-Veggies.com to supply produce to local grocer and bakery, 46 Mott Bakery, who have been feeding the Chinatown community with free meals during shelter-in-place.
At the start of the pandemic, Patrick Mock and his staff at 46 Mott Bakery have been working tirelessly to make 350-450 meals per day to feed the homeless and elderly of the community during the day. These meals also include the 120 servings that are donated to frontline workers at Beth Israel Hospital every night, which has been ongoing for the past six weeks. Welcome to Chinatown will be providing 46 Mott Bakery with approximately ten week’s worth of fresh produce to aid their efforts with the remaining Greens for Good donation funds.
On behalf of CPC and Welcome to Chinatown, we’d like to thank everyone who contributed to keeping the Manhattan Chinatown community safe and healthy through the Greens for Good initiative!
