Student Design Competition with MARKET x Immigrant Social Services and Welcome to Chinatown

Do you consider yourself a designer, a maker, a creative? Have a passion for art, fashion, brands, culture? We’re looking for students who are interested in building their own brand.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

MARKET and Immigrant Social Services are teaming up with Welcome to Chinatown to host a design competition for young creatives with an entrepreneurial mindset and a vision for bringing their ideas to life.

How It Works

  • This competition is open to students between the ages of 14 and 18 in Chinatown and the Lower East Side

  • (4) students will be selected by MARKET, and will be given a 1:1 virtual coaching and live design session with Mike Cherman, the owner and founder of MARKET, focused on their streetwear designs, sketches, or ideas. As the students present their ideas and inspirations for their brand, Mike will either create a design for the student, which can be used for apparel, accessories, and so on, or he will review the student’s work and offer advice/tips to make for a more powerful design.

  • After the sessions, one student’s design will be selected to be physically produced onto t-shirts and will be sold online at MadeinChinatownNY.com. 10% of proceeds will be donated to Immigrant Social Services and the remaining proceeds will be given to the winning youth.

Our hope is that this program serves as a launching pad for young students to be able to create their own brands. Applications are open until 9/30.
