A Letter From Our Founders on Anti-Asian Hate
We are grieving, angry, and dismayed at the senseless violence that stems from hate, bigotry, and racism. The horrific hate crime in Atlanta has left eight dead, six of them Asian women. This one hits particularly hard as Asian women ourselves and adds to the pain of mounting distress that the Asian community has been facing on anti-Asian violence. As we mourn the lives we lost last night — and others who fell victim to anti-Asian hate — we are finding it difficult to express the pain and trauma of how close this feels.
The rise in anti-Asian hate crimes has disproportionately affected women (64% of reported incidents @stopaapihate). Society’s hypersexualization and fetishization of Asian women has pushed the narrative that we are dispensable trophies for conquering. We are not.
Today, we are sending love and light to the Asian community as we demand for more than just acknowledgement of the past year’s rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and the systemic racism that has plagued communities of color. Racism cannot be reactionary to current events, as we have seen historically with SARS and 9/11. We are demanding dialogue that enacts change and presses for solutions to ensure this is not a moment.
Start today by checking in on each other. And to our beautiful Asian community of women: it is okay to feel how you are feeling now, whether a mess, tired, numb, or all of it. We will continue to support each other.
Please join us this Sunday at Columbus Park in Manhattan Chinatown at 1PM to rally against anti-Asian violence. We have created a series of protest posters that will be handed out for free, or if you’re outside of NYC, organize your own rally and download our posters for free:
With love,
