Grace Young’s Top Picks at Mee Sum Cafe

Mee Sum Cafe is one of the most iconic spots in Chinatown, serving up traditional Cantonese food in an old-school setting. We’re excited to spotlight some of Grace Young’s menu picks, including a secret menu item that is in season until the end of the month!

Be sure to visit Mee Sum Cafe soon at 26 Pell St!

Pick 1: Cantonese Stir-Fried Crabs

Order one day in advance! The restaurant closes at 5:30 so plan for lunch or early dinner. Text the restaurant manager, Ah Hing, at 347-784-5175 and tell her your name. Let her know you want the crab and the time you’ll arrive the next day. You’ll get crabs stir-fried to perfection with ginger, scallions, garlic, minced pork, crab roe, and a hint of Anaheim chili—for only $25! Crab season is until the end of November, so order soon!

Pick 2: Zongzi

“Mee Sum is famous for its freshly made zong-zi, made daily. These sticky rice tamales feature a variety of fillings, from the traditional Toishan combination of pork, dried shrimp and salted duck yolk, to Cantonese-style variations with green mung beans and peanuts, and even Shanghainese options fillings with pork or red bean paste.”

Pick 3: Ginger Salted Chicken Over Rice

“The poached chicken, paired with fresh scallion and ginger sauce, is always cooked to perfection. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor, it embodies classic Cantonese soul food, served atop a bed of steaming rice.”
