Why wayfinding?
Imagine the possibilities when we tell you that an average of 19,000 pedestrians cross the iconic Brooklyn Bridge daily - over 7 million visitors per year - yet wayfinding is nearly non-existent! This is a golden opportunity to redirect and guide these pedestrians to discover the treasures of Manhattan Chinatown.
We invite you to participate in Gotham Park x Welcome to Chinatown's first ever design competition focused on enhancing wayfinding and driving foot traffic to Chinatown.
Competition Goals
-
Supporting Chinatown Small Businesses
Chinatown is home to a diverse array of small businesses, with 94% having fewer than 20 employees. These businesses are the lifeblood of the community, offering affordable goods, culinary delights, and unique services. By participating in this charrette, you'll contribute to the growth and prosperity of these enterprises while making Chinatown more accessible to all.
-
Breaking Down Barriers
Since 9/11, the eastern half of Park Row from the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge to Chatham Square has been a no-traffic security zone. This, combined with the Brooklyn Bridge, creates a mental and physical barrier between Chinatown and Lower Manhattan, a major source of consumers. But change is on the horizon with the forthcoming Gotham Park. Help design the wayfinding system that bridges this divide and brings Chinatown and Lower Manhattan closer together.
-
Seamless Integration with MEET CHINATOWN App
Our vision extends beyond wayfinding; it's about creating connections. By participating in this charrette, you'll play a crucial role in designing a wayfinding system that seamlessly integrates with the MEET CHINATOWN app. Imagine the impact of guiding visitors and locals alike to explore Chinatown's hidden gems, all while fostering community engagement and supporting local businesses.
